UPS batteries fail quietly. The unit reports healthy until the supply actually drops, and then the equipment it was protecting goes down anyway. Replacing at a sensible interval matters more here than in almost any other application.
Lithium in place of lead-acid
A lithium replacement is lighter, holds charge far better over long idle periods, and lasts more cycles. Two things have to be checked before swapping:
- The UPS charging arrangement. Many UPS units charge on a lead-acid profile. A lithium pack fitted behind an unmodified lead-acid charger will not be charged correctly and its life will be short. This has to be confirmed before the swap, not after.
- Discharge current. A UPS discharges hard for a short time. The BMS must permit the full inverter draw, including the surge when the load transfers.
Tell us the UPS model and we will tell you whether a lithium replacement is appropriate for it, or whether staying with lead-acid is the more sensible answer for that unit. Not every UPS is a good candidate, and we would rather say so.
