Work out the number before you buy
The single most useful thing you can do is add up what you intend to run and for how long. Add the wattage of each item, multiply by the hours you need it, and you have the energy the battery has to store. Send us that figure and we will tell you what covers it.
Two items dominate most outdoor loads and are worth checking specifically: anything that heats (kettles, cookers, heaters) and anything with a compressor (a portable fridge). Heating draws far more than people expect. A fridge draws modestly but continuously, and its compressor surges at start.
Portable power station or custom pack?
- A portable power station suits mixed AC and USB loads, and is the simpler answer when you want sockets and a display.
- A custom pack suits a fixed installation — a battery for lights on a stall, in a boat, or in a vehicle — where you want the battery shaped to the space and no inverter overhead.
Charging away from supply
If you intend to recharge from solar, tell us. Panel sizing is where these setups most often disappoint: an undersized panel will not recover what you use overnight, and the pack drifts down over several days.
